Troop 682 Planning meeting
By: Atharv Singh & Samvith Annavaram
This year, the PLC for Troop 682 was able to discuss and decide on the troop’s activities and goals moving forward. Campouts, merit badges, meetings, and rank advancements were all addressed in the meeting. Some goals set for the future include planning more engaging campouts focused on achieving specific objectives, hosting monthly merit badge sessions that prioritize Eagle-required badges, and providing more rank advancement instruction. It was also decided that the troop should encourage Scouts to work on earning merit badges independently alongside in-meeting sessions and at summer camp.
Regarding monthly plans, on August 13th, there will be a board game night led by the service patrol. On August 20th, there will be a movie night, also planned by the service patrol, and on August 27th, there will be a session on uniform standards. In September, the PLC decided on a beach campout. September 3rd will include a uniform check, and most September meetings will involve instruction led by the program patrols to prepare for the camporee. In October, the PLC scheduled the camporee for early in the month and the breakfast overnighter for later in the month. In November, a hiking campout was planned, with a strong preference for an Old Rag hike. In December, different Scout skills will be taught in troop meetings to prepare for the Advanced Scout Skills campout, which will feature patrol competitions.
January will include a day trip to the Pentagon to help complete requirements for the Citizenship in the Nation or Emergency Preparedness merit badges. A battleship campout is scheduled for later in the month. In February, a day trip to the Manassas Battlefield was chosen to help complete hiking requirements for rank advancements or merit badges. April will feature a New Scout Skills campout, while May will include the Lake Anna campout, and June will have a canoe campout. In July, the PLC voted to attend Camp Olmstead in Goshen for summer camp. For August 2025, there will be the annual Lake Anna planning meeting. Although concerns were raised about maintaining focus during the meeting, the PLC has resolved to stay as focused as possible; if a meeting cannot be held at Lake Anna, it will take place at an alternate location, such as Camp Snyder.
As a final goal, the PLC decided to encourage more adult involvement. Several events and activities have been canceled in the past due to a lack of adult participation. While many adults are active and involved, some don’t attend certain activities. The PLC aims to encourage Scouts to invite their parents or guardians to participate in any events they can attend.
